Lupe Tortilla – A Houston Gluten Free Tex Mex Haven

I was pleasantly surprised with Lupe Tortilla as I am typically skeptical when it comes to Tex Mex outside of San Antonio!

I enjoyed a mixture of gluten free chicken and beef fajitas served on a hot comal with green onions, grilled red jalapeno and grilled poblano.  The fajitas were accompanied gluten free rice, beans and an assortment of toppings.  Cheese, sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo are served in a molcajete. Please excuse the quality of these photos, I was outside on the patio at night and used my travel camera. :)

Goode Company Bar-B-Q – Gluten Free Barbeque in Houston, TX

Goode Company Bar-B-Q is a must-have for gluten free barbecue in Houston.  I arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon for a highly recommended barbecue lunch.  I researched my gluten free options and made my decisions before I even walked in.  There was a line out the door, which is a always an indicator of a great meal ahead. The line also made me nervous because I knew once I reached my turn to order I was going to have to hold up the line and explain to the person serving me all of the intricacies of being gluten free.  Much to my surprise, the second I mentioned I was gluten free they plated my entire order on a back counter, with a clean cutting board and knife…all in my line of sight! I was so relieved and so happy that, firstly, they knew what gluten was and, secondly, they completely took care of me and there was no risk of cross-contamination.

Take a look at their menu below…and I need to mention that they do sell Redbridge gluten free beer for those of us who enjoy an ice cold beer with our barbecue!

Pho Four Star – Gluten Free Pho – San Antonio, TX

Pho Four Star is serving up hot, gorgeous bowls of gluten free Vietnamese Beef  Noodle Soup called Pho. If you have never ventured into a Vietnamese restaurant you are missing out on a world of gluten free soup options.   Pho is great for lunch or dinner but it’s the best as a breakfast…especially for a hangover cure!

Once you decide which soup you would like…beef, chicken, shrimp or vegetable pho you will be presented with a plate of fresh cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, jalapenos and limes. By the way, the noodles in the soup are actually rice noodles and almost always gluten free! (Always ask your waiter or a manager to check the package they use.)

When the soup arrives you start peeling your fresh herb and adding your bean sprouts.  Add a few jalepenos for a little kick and be sure to squeeze a lime over your bowl soup. (You get to play with you food!)  Also, if you love spicy, especially on a cold day, you must add some sriracha!

The finished soup is aromatic and full of bright colors.  Stirring it all together and incorporating the rice noodles with the new additions is the final step.

Pho Four Star is located at 5009 Walzem Road on the Northeast side of San Antonio. 210-599-9968

Sprinkles Cupcakes! “G” is for Gluten Free (cupcakes)

Gluten free cupcakes are few and far between but Sprinkles Cupcakes is offering Houston and Dallas a gluten free choice. When I visited Sprinkles in Houston their gluten free cupcake choice was a Red Velvet gluten free cake with a creamy, dreamy cream cheese frosting.

The Red Velvet Gluten Free Cupcake was moist and delicious.  I am going to be honest, in my pre-gluten free years red velvet cake was my least favorite cake. I never enjoyed the aftertaste of red food coloring.  SO…when I took the first bite of this Red Velvet Cupcake I was pleasantly surprised for a number of reasons.  First and foremost, the texture of the cake is moist and wonderful. The sweet vanilla taste of the cake never gave a hint of any negative aftertaste. I enjoyed every morsel!

Crave Cupcakes Houston – Gluten Free Cupcakes!

Gluten free cupcakes are few and far between in Texas but luckily for Houston they have a few choices!!! Crave Cupcakes is one of those cupcakeries that provide ONE gluten free option, only a few days a week. ( I believe it was Tues, Fri and Sundays)  I found out because I showed up on a busy Saturday and they very kindly informed me that they only do a gluten free option on certain says.  Needless to say, I was disappointed.

When I arrived Sunday I was very excited to see an entire display of beautifully decorated chocolate GLUTEN FREE cupcakes.  The label was mispelled but I overlooked it :)

I loved the decadent chocolate frosting and the gluten free cake was actually moist and delectable!   Chocolate sprinkles perched atop the gorgeous morsel gave it its eye catching appeal.  I took it home to enjoy and they were kind enough to package it in a cute little box ( I mention this because a different bakery sent me home with my cupcake in a little brown bag!?!?).

Ruggles Green Gluten Free Fish Tacos and Gluten Free Carrot Cake! Houston, Tx

I love discovering new gluten free restaurants each time I visit Houston but I am drawn to Ruggles Green like a moth to a flame.   I always stop in and try something new because their gluten free menu is so diverse.  This visit I chose the Spicy Gluten Free Fish Tacos. Just look at them…fresh grilled fish topped with cabbage, pico de gallo, queso fresco and micro greens.  They are drizzled with a spicy chipotle mango sauce and served on crispy corn tortillas.  The fish tacos are partnered up with a homemade habanero sauce if you like a little kick!

Ok, so I confess. I have a weakness for sweet potato anything…and Ruggles Green does a great job with these sweet potato fries!  I ordered a side of them just because…and yes, they made a  Gluten Free Carrot Cake.  A beautiful presentation with a chocolate twill and a side of vanilla ice cream with the raspberry and mango sauces collaborating to make a lovely bed for the carrot cake to rest upon.   I enjoyed the rich, creamy frosting with flecks of nuts and dove right in for the cake.  It was very satisfying although I am very sad the cake layers were so thin. Gluten free carrot cake was delicious and I made sure to finish it!

At Ruggles Green they always place a Gluten Free Card of approval that reassures us the kitchen is extra aware of our needs and they did their best for us.  I love that they slide this card on every gluten free pizza, salad, pasta and dessert plate.

Maudie’s Milagro – Gluten Free Austin Tex Mex – Que Rico!!!

There is nothing better than gluten free tortilla chips, queso and salsa…ahhh, Gluten Free Texas…I love you!  Maudie’s Milagro, “milagro” means miracle in Spanish, has gone above and beyond to cater to the gluten free population.  They brought us a very colorful, full length gluten free menu…It is so refreshing to have a whole menu and many options to choose from.  I asked if I could take some of their gluten free tortilla chips home and they brought me an entire sealed plastic bag full of chips!  I took their Diablo Sol Food (queso with beef and pico de gallo) to go and some of their salsa…just in case.

For dinner I chose enchiladas because it is usually a challenge to find gluten free enchiladas!  They were deliciously smothered in sauce and cheese, stuffed with pulled chicken and topped off with a couple of grilled onions.  Your plate is accompanied with Spanish rice and borracho beans….I am a critic of the pinto beans because I love to cook a pot of beans at home…and these were wonderful.

We had a short wait at the beginning of the evening that Friday night which is understandable. We sat at the bar and I discovered they do not have gluten free margaritas!?!?! They do have Redbridge, a gluten free beer, but I went with Tito’s and soda…Tito’s is a gluten free vodka born and raised in Austin, TX.  We were escorted to a table on the patio and enjoyed cool weather and a quiet corner. Overall, I had a great experience and I cannot wait to go back and try their gluten free fajitas, their soup and their salads!  In addition to lunch and dinner, I discovered they also do Gluten Free Breakfast…I will definitely be back very soon.

Perla’s Seafood & Oyster Bar in Austin is gluten free friendly!

Perla’s on South Congress, Austin, is a wonderful gluten free friendly restaurant!  I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to Perla’s and our waiter already knew what I could and could not have.  My selections were plenty and I was very excited to dive in to some fresh seafood! I kept  my choices simple and light enough to enjoy the rest of the evening sharing cocktails with my friends (it’s Austin after all).  I am sharing my photo of the tiny, though beautiful, candle that lit out table. This explains why my pics are so dark…my friends started using their flashlight on their phone to help me light up the plate…doesn’t work so well :)

I whet my appetite with a selection of East Coast Oysters as a starter…fresh and phenomenal! I then proceeded to indulge in the Perla’s Iceberg Wedge topped with Cherry Tomaotoes and Lump Crab Meat.  The Thousand Island dressing was perfect and I was in salad heaven!

The Lobster was succulent and wonderful.  Perla’s takes the extra step with grilling half a lemon and garnishing the plate with a fresh herb salad.   After drizzling the warm lemon juice over the lobster you have to construct the perfect bite with a little piece of buttery lobster and a bit of the fresh herb salad… Altogether a great experience!

Wildfish Seafood Grille – San Antonio’s Gluten Free Seafood Paradise!

Wildfish Seafood Grille is a Gluten Free Seafood lover’s paradise!  North Atlantic Blue Point Oysters as a starter…YES! All I need with my oysters are  a really good cocktail sauce and a healthy supply of atomic horseradish.  These Blue Point Oysters are  so sweet and fresh.  These osters are perfect as an appetizer at their very popular bar too!  We also tried the New England Jonah Crab Claws and we were equally impressed.  The delicate Jonah Crab Claws come 4 to an order, accompanied by traditional sauces and a lovely, light crab salad.  Gluten free appetizers are usually challenging to find but Wildfish shines with these succulent gluten free options! (Please pardon the photos, the dimly lit ambiance is in effect)!

I love fresh, crispy wedge salads and Wildfish offers several gluten free salads to choose from.  I ordered the BLT Wedge with Maytag Blue Cheese.  I love Maytag Blue Cheese on anything!  This gluten free salad is actually a half order (the chef will happily split the salad for you and your dinner companion).

ROASTED CHILEAN SEA BASS! Yes, sweet, succulent, gorgeous, buttery sea bass can be prepared gluten free!  The server will let you know that the chef usually dusts the fish in flour but this will not be done, obviously, with your gluten free entree.  I always make double, even triple, sure that they understand what I can and cannot have.  I never have any issues at Wildfish and have always had the best care and service.  The Roasted Chilean Sea Bass is served in a delicate lemon-white wine broth with garlic and scallions.  The sauteed spinach with shallots is an excellent compliment to the fish so be sure to add this to the order!
